The College Performance

The College Performance
A confident front
At Berkshire State University, Brendan quickly adopts the language and habits of a carefree party-going “bro.” He and Zack bond over drinking, jokes, and shared contempt for people they consider outsiders, giving Brendan a ready-made identity in an unfamiliar place.
Comfort that narrows his world
The roommate friendship makes the transition feel manageable, but it also lets Brendan avoid the difficult work of forming new relationships and taking college seriously. He treats awkwardness as something to joke away and imagines that fitting in means finding people who already resemble him. That strategy offers immediate belonging while making deeper adjustment less likely.
A Fracture in the Routine

A Fracture in the Routine
Failure beneath the bravado
Brendan’s partying and procrastination catch up with him. He performs poorly on assignments and exams, drinks heavily, and begins to feel excluded when Zack is absent or absorbed in other relationships. A meal alone in the dining hall exposes how little security his confident social persona has actually given him.
A first attempt to repair things
After nearly breaking down in public, Brendan makes a to-do list and takes small steps such as doing his laundry and trying to study. The list reveals that he knows what is going wrong, but knowing does not yet give him the discipline or support to change. His self-image as someone who can coast through life collides with the accumulating evidence that he cannot.
A Family Visit Unravels

A Family Visit Unravels
An unexpected family arrangement
Brendan hopes Parents Weekend will be time with his father alone, but Ted arrives with Bethany and Jonathan. Brendan initially responds to the visit with more warmth than he expected: Jonathan is calmer, and the family manages a pleasant walk around campus.
Jealousy he cannot admit
When an airplane triggers Jonathan’s severe meltdown, Ted holds and protects his younger son through the struggle. Brendan feels pity for them, but also an old jealousy at seeing his father offer Jonathan an unyielding physical closeness he rarely offered Brendan. The visit makes Brendan’s family pain visible without giving him a way to explain it, deepening his sense that he does not know where he belongs.
Isolation Made Public

Isolation Made Public
A failed attempt at intimacy
Brendan’s date with Amber ends after he ignores her distress during sex and uses forceful, degrading language without checking whether she welcomes it. Amber stops him, confronts him, and sends him away. Brendan is startled by the consequences and initially understands the incident as a misunderstanding rather than a serious failure to respect her boundaries.
The label on the wall
Soon afterward, Brendan sees his portrait in the Student Center exhibition My Call-Out Wall, identified as a huge disappointment. The public judgment wounds him, but it also makes his private failure impossible to dismiss. Amber will not resume contact, Zack has withdrawn from their old friendship, and Brendan’s familiar defenses no longer restore his sense of belonging.
A Different First Step

A Different First Step
Leaving without a plan
Brendan’s loneliness and academic trouble culminate in his decision to withdraw from Berkshire State University. Returning home does not immediately solve anything: he still struggles to explain what went wrong, and his mother worries that she is letting him avoid responsibility.
Work as a practical foothold
George offers Brendan a job as a plumbing apprentice, and Brendan discovers that physical work, visible progress, and a realistic route to a good income suit him better than the college life he had been trying to imitate. He remains uncertain about education and his future, but the apprenticeship restores some confidence. His path changes from pretending to thrive to building competence one task at a time.
